The Origin of Ian
The Origin of Ian
“Ian, Ian, where did you come from?” I hear you ask. Well, let me tell you—it’s quite a story!
My life, as simple arithmetic would have it, began in Broken Hill. My parents led a rather unconventional life—something I’d be happy to share more about if you’re curious! Back in 1950, they started running a hostel for primary school-aged boys, providing a home for children from remote farming properties during the school term. Our family stayed in Broken Hill until the end of the 1955 school year, likely around mid to late December, when we moved to Bowral. There, my parents took over another hostel, this time for high school-aged girls.
As for me, I made my grand entrance into the world on Wednesday, 2nd May 1956, at Strathmore Private Hospital, located at 59 Wingecarribee Street, Bowral. And so, my story began!
From Berrima District Historical & Family History Society Newsletter.
My mother and I, standing outside Strathmore on the 12th September, 1999, had no idea where the place was. But over a cup of tea in the C.W.A. rooms during Tulip Time, someone kindly pointed us in the right direction.
Outside 1 Park Road, Bowral, the house down the driveway was the hostel in 1956. Date unknown.
